Isa is the eleventh rune of the Futhark and represents ice, the force that halts the flow and crystallizes matter. Its name evokes the primordial element present in Ginnungagap, the cosmic void from which life originated. If Nauthiz is effort, Isa is the necessary stillness: it is the winter that silences the noise of the world, forcing every creature to stop and look toward its own center.

Esoterically, it is the rune of self-mastery and absolute concentration. It represents the moment when external action comes to a halt to make room for the strengthening of the Self. Just as ice makes water solid, allowing us to walk upon it, Isa turns confused emotions into a clear and stable structure. It teaches the value of waiting and patience, protecting what is fragile beneath an impenetrable surface until the right moment for rebirth.
