Birth Rune Talisman: Discover and Create Your Personal Amulet
There is an exact moment when you entered this world. An hour, a day, a precise position of the sky that will never repeat itself in the same way. The Nordic cultures knew this: that moment is not random. It leaves a mark — and in the runic alphabet, that mark has a name. In fact, it has two.
The birth rune talisman is not a generic amulet. It does not carry the energy of a rune chosen by chance or by preference: it carries your energy, the one imprinted in the sky the moment you took your first breath. To create it properly, you need two runes, both derived from your natal chart, each telling something different about who you are.

Runes and the Cosmos
The structure of astrology reaches back to the dawn of time, to when humanity first raised its gaze to the celestial vault and began to wonder about the mysterious forces linking the stars, the planets, the turning of the seasons and the unfolding of life on earth. Runes — expressions of the divine, forged by the gods at the beginning of time — are archetypal symbols of universal wisdom, directly connected to the same archetypes we find in the planets and zodiac signs. There is nothing irreverent about bringing the 24 runic signs together with the 12 stations of the zodiac: from this encounter emerge unsuspected connections, dense with magical and esoteric meaning, that offer us the keys to deciphering the hidden self within.
Each zodiac sign holds two runes, one for each half of its thirty degrees. The two runes of each sign represent the positive and the negative pole — the alpha and the omega, the light and the dark, the solve et coagula of the alchemical tradition. Duality is inherent in the runic alphabet itself, and it mirrors perfectly the structure of the zodiac.
Why the Runes travel the Zodiac in reverse
The runic-zodiacal journey does not follow the traditional astrological order: it reverses it. The reason runs deep into one of the oldest principles of esoteric wisdom, expressed in the Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistus: that which is above is as that which is below. The two orders — celestial and earthly — are mirrors of each other, one the inverted image of the other.
The two gates of the zodiac are the solstitial thresholds. Cancer is the gate of men, the point through which souls descend into the manifest world. Capricorn is the gate of the gods, the threshold through which one is freed from the chains of existence and does not return. The runic journey begins at the thirtieth degree of Sagittarius — the exit gate in the traditional astrological order — which in the reversed runic sequence becomes instead the point of departure. From there, the runes travel the sky backwards, each zodiac sign traversed from its highest degree to its lowest. At the end of the cycle, the journey returns to the same gate, at the first degree of Capricorn, closing the circle.

The first rune: your date of birth
The first rune of your talisman is derived from your date of birth. Each zodiac sign is divided into two halves of fifteen days each, and each half corresponds to a specific rune of the Elder Futhark. All you need to know is when you were born to find the first of your two runes.

The second rune: the Ascendant
The second rune is what makes the talisman truly unique. It is derived from the degree of your astrological Ascendant — the point of the ecliptic that was rising on the horizon at the exact moment you came into the world. The Ascendant shifts approximately every two hours, so to calculate it precisely you need three pieces of information: your date of birth, your exact time of birth, and your place of birth. With these three elements it is possible to draw up your complete natal chart and from there identify the degree of your Ascendant — and therefore your second rune.
If you don't have this information to hand, or don't know how to interpret it, that's not a problem. Write to me with what you have and I'll be happy to help you find your two runes before you order.
The two runes are then engraved on opposite sides of the same talisman — one on the front, one on the back — with equal importance. Neither is primary, neither is secondary. They are the two poles of the same energy.
The elemental triplicities
The twenty-four runes do not distribute themselves at random along the zodiacal circle. They also reflect the four elements of the alchemical tradition — Fire, Water, Air and Earth — and their qualities are clearly readable in the runes that embody them.
The Fire runes (Fehu, Uruz, Hagalaz, Nauthiz, Tiwaz, Berkana) express primal energy, power and dynamic vitality. Tiwaz is the rune of the god of war; Berkana the feminine force of fertility and generation; Hagalaz the fury of the elements; Nauthiz the friction that produces flame; Fehu overflowing generosity; Uruz the untamed strength of nature.
The Water runes (Thurisaz, Ansuz, Isa, Jera, Ehwaz, Mannaz) speak of depth, intuition and inner connection. The Air runes (Raido, Kenaz, Eihwaz, Perthro, Laguz, Ingwaz) carry thought, communication and transformation. The Earth runes (Gebo, Wunjo, Algiz, Sowilo, Othala, Dagaz) ground, protect and pass on what endures.
Knowing the element of your runes adds another layer of meaning to your talisman — and often reflects something you already recognise in yourself.
Crafting the talisman
The wood chosen by tradition for the birth talisman is ash — Fraxinus, the cosmic tree Yggdrasil, the axis that in Norse cosmology connects the nine worlds. This is no coincidence: ash carries within it the symbolism of the tree of life, the centre around which everything turns.
Every Dogstar Wood Lab talisman is born from artisan craftsmanship: the wood is hand-selected and prepared, the runes laser-engraved with millimetre precision. The natural grain of the ash is part of the symbol itself — no two pieces are identical, just as no two birth rune combinations are ever the same. For those who want something even more personal, it is possible to choose a different wood essence from those available, each with its own unique colour, grain and origins.
